I felt this way for years.

I was in high school and I felt that I was falling short in every aspect of my life: I wasn’t in good shape and didn’t like what I saw in the mirror, I wasn’t doing great in school, and I wasn’t pursuing any interests or hobbies. I felt adrift.

Fast forward a few years...

My life looks a bit different—I had just graduated with high honors from a top university, learned both Arabic and Chinese, run multiple ultramarathons, lived in a foreign country, started a business, and was in the best shape of my life.

So what changed? How did I go from a pizza-eating, video-game playing slug to a multi-lingual, ultramarathoning, honors graduate and business owner?

Believe it or not, it all started with my nutrition.

When I was in high school, I had one guideline for nutrition: eat what I want. I didn’t know the difference between a calorie and a cannoli and I would eat whatever was put in front of me: pop-tarts, frozen pizzas, mac & cheese.

My diet was high in all the bad stuff and low in all the good stuff. It wasn’t that I was trying to make the wrong choices, I simply just didn’t know any better.

As a result, I had no energy, constantly felt tired and groggy, and had no motivation to do what I needed to do. Everything felt like a burden and the only thing that helped me feel better was either 1) eating more bad food 2) escaping into my virtual world.

Unbeknownst to me at the time, I was caught in a vicious cycle:

Everything changed one day when I was in gym class. My teacher was a curmudgeonly older man who talked and acted like it was still 1950. While most students were either afraid or confused by him, I was fascinated.

Despite his old age and seemingly antiquated lifestyle, he was in better shape than most teenagers and had boundless energy. On a whim one day, I asked him about his approach to nutrition. He said to me: “I don’t eat anything that my grandma wouldn’t eat.”

For whatever reason, that line stuck with me and I began to use it as a nutritional guideline rather than “eat what I want”.

He told me his grandma was born in the late 1800s, so that’s what I used as my filter for what I ate. Would someone back then have eaten pop tarts, frozen pizza, or mac & cheese? Of course not. So I didn’t eat them either.

Because processed foods largely didn’t exist until modernity, I didn’t eat any of them. I replaced cereal with oatmeal, sandwiches with salads, and frozen pizza with fruit smoothies.

As I replaced the processed foods with whole foods, I began noticing changes…

I felt less sluggish.

I found myself excited to get out of bed in the morning instead of smashing my snooze button for an hour.

I lost my puffiness.

I got leaner and saw something that I had never seen before, my abs.

As my energy, mood, and health improved, I no longer felt the urge to escape to my virtual world and I found myself logging in less and less. Within a couple months, I wasn’t logging in at all.

By my senior year of high school, I was elected captain of my sports team, earned my best grades ever and the rank of Eagle Scout.

At graduation, it felt bittersweet. I was proud of the progress I had made over the last year, but I felt like I had still left so much on the table. I wished that I could do it all over with the same mental and physical energy that I’d had for the last year. I felt that I could do anything…and I did.

I continued to educate myself on diet and nutrition, taking courses in school and earning a certification in sports nutrition. As I learned more and refined my own diet, I realized something: it isn’t that complicated.

Your body needs two things:

  • I ran a half-marathon, then a half-Ironman, and then an ultramarathon.
  • I started a business and earned more in one year than I had in my entire life.

Halfway through college, I decided I wanted to try Chinese instead of Arabic. As part of my Chinese program, I was given the opportunity to live in China for an extended period and I jumped at the chance.

I’d be living with a Chinese family who spoke no English, so I’d be fully immersed in Chinese culture. This also meant that I’d be fully immersed in the Chinese diet.

This was the only thing that concerned me about going there. I had been crushing it on my protein-rich, whole foods diet and I didn’t want to lose my momentum. I wasn’t exactly sure what I’d be eating in China, but I knew it wouldn’t be what I was used to.

So I thought of ways that I could solve this? I would need something that met the following criteria:

  • convenient and portable
  • clean ingredients
  • great nutrition with protein
  • tastes good so I could eat it every day

There was only one food that met all of those conditions: a nutrition bar.

Great! Now I just needed to find a nutrition bar that met those conditions. How hard could it be?

As it turns out…HARD.

  • And ate fruit with macaque monkeys in the jungle

During these adventures, I didn’t limit what I could or couldn’t eat. Part of the adventure was the food and I tried anything and everything that China had to offer (even pig brain!)

Because I was eating pork buns and egg fried rice almost daily, my diet was not as dialed in as it was at home. But by supplementing my diet each day with the bars I had brought, I was able to pack in the whole food nutrition that I needed to feel good and stay on track nutritionally.

How long will it take to receive my order?

Orders placed before 12pm will be sent same-day, orders placed after 12pm will be sent the next business day. If our warehouse crew has had a few Ventis, they might be able to get your order out same-day if placed after 12pm, but we can’t guarantee it.

Because we ship from MA, it takes 1-3 days to deliver East Coast orders and 3-5 days to deliver West Coast orders.

What happens if my order arrives damaged?

What’s your return policy?

Just let us know within 90-days. We’ll send you back your money, but you don’t need to send us back anything.

Why 90 days? We needed to have some kind of time-limit on it and three months seemed reasonable. I mean who’s trying to return an order of protein bars 3-months after ordering them?

What is the shelf-life?

The best-by date is 12-months from when we make ‘em. This date is stamped on each bar and is when we recommend eating them for maximum mouth pleasure.

It’s safe to eat them after this date, we just can’t guarantee they’ll bring the big flavor that you’re used to.
